At Little Wonders we have 4 family literacy programs. Firstly, we offer Scholastic Books to our families monthly. Scholastic is an affordable way to add to your child’s home library. Secondly, we have a “Story & Art” box. The box goes home with each child. It contains a book and a simple art project . The parent and child sit down together to read and complete the art project. The child returns the art piece to class to share with his/her peers and to display on a bulletin board. The themes for the stories tie into our curriculum for the month. The children look forward to their “homework” with great enthusiasm. It also gives our families a special moment to share with their children. Thirdly we participate in the Book it! Beginners literacy program sponsored by Pizza Hut every March and April. Our most recent addition is Raising a Reader; a lending library, the children check-out book bags from school, return and check out more! Raising a Reader is a grant we received through First 5 Contra Costa Children and Families Commission. We have also been beneficiaries of the Ready, Set, Read Literacy Grants sponsored by First 5 Contra Costa Children and Families Commission. We cannot thank First 5 enough for the programs they have established for early learners and we are extremely grateful to the commission for awarding us such generous grants.
